Happy Sunday, friends! After sharing some images/stories from my front porch this year, I received so many questions about how to decorate a porch for fall. Did I spend a gazillion dollars doing it? Where did I buy my decor? To be honest, I’ve only recently gained an interest in interior decor thanks to my relatively new day job, but I’ve always had a love for decorating for the seasons and the holidays. I have a couple of secrets I’d love to share that help me decorate my porch for Fall without breaking the bank.
First of all, you need to know the best places to go to purchase affordable seasonal decor. My go-to is TJ Maxx Homegoods. Not only do they provide great decor at a budget-friendly price point, but they’re always on trend and release their holiday decor months in advance. The disadvantage… you have to start shopping for this decor wayyyy earlier than everyone else because all of the good items get snatched up. Probably earlier than you’d want to start spending money on Fall and Christmas decor, but at least you save in the long run and come out on top with the best items. Homegoods is where I got my Fall wreath, and I purchased it in August! Other similar decor stores that I’ve had success at are Hobby Lobby and Michaels. Both of those stores are craft stores, so you’ll likely need to do a little DIY such as creating your own wreath rather than purchasing one that is complete, but you can easily find affordable decor there as well.
Secondly – you want to start with pumpkins and mums, always. They’re the base of Fall decor. You can easily purchase wreaths, scarecrows, shoots of dried corn from Homegoods to mix within, but you can’t possibly have a Fall stoop without the basic Fall decor needs. I like purchasing a color variety of mums (oranges, yellows, reds) as well as a mix of different types of pumpkins (white, traditional orange, mint – found these for the first time this year!) and mixing them all together.
Last but not least is the arrangement, which in my opinion is the most difficult part. You want your front stoop to look asymmetrical but still have balance. I spread all the items out across my porch and mix things around until I think I have the perfect arrangement. Try stacking different sized pumpkins, mixing around the sizes of your mums as well as the color, and using the different shapes of pumpkins/gords to coordinate the entire stoop. If something looks out of place, continue to switch things around until it is just right. Since this step is the most difficult, I always search on Pinterest for inspiration in case I need to add something else in or take it away. Eventually you will get the perfect look that is blogger approved and envied by all your neighbors. 🙂
